General Tap Performance Curriculum Notes

Our performance curriculum for Dance and Performance classes (45 and 60 minute classes) will be focused on tap from now through the end of June.

While tap shoes are not required for class, all dancers will be exposed to tap basics more heavily during the winter and spring months. Keep in mind, tap shoes are required for the spring show. Typically, we will use tap shoes for the first half of class and change to ballet slippers for the second half of class. Please continue to bring your ballet slippers to class each week. The tap shoes should be black. The style is your choice.

Some additional reminders, tap shoes are more difficult, and take more time, to break in. Purchasing tap shoes right before the show is not the best plan. I recommend at least a month of practice time to break them in. Also, many of the tap steps will be easier for your Small Fry to execute if they have tap shoes. In case you practice at home, tap shoes can be very slippery on tile floors and will damage hard wood. You can spray the bottom of your child's tap shoes with hair spray to create some traction if need be.

To purchase new tap shoes I recommend visiting Capezio Dance Theatre Shop.

We do have the shoe exchange program up and running. You can email shoes@smallfrydanceclub.com to check in on available styles and sizes.

"Too Cute" in Burlingame also has used tap shoes for sale. The average cost is about $10. They have 20 plus gently used pairs of tap shoes for sale, ranging in size from 6 - 13.

Costumes (These are just examples)

For the tap performances we have families build their own costume at home. Each family should use the color theme of black and red. I recommend starting with a black base of dance wear and adding red accessories. For example, belts, gloves, head bands, wrist bands, necklaces, bracelets, ties, sock, leg warmers, vests, and suspenders. Below are some examples. You do not need to copy these whatsoever. In fact we want the dancers to have their own unique look this time around. These are just meant to give examples on use of color, and possible styles.

Footwear

All performers must wear tap shoes. Shiny dress shoes are not allowed.
Tap shoes must be black. The style is your choice. We recommend purchasing tap shoes sometime in March or April, as your dancer will need time to practice in the shoes and also break them in.

Small Fry Shoe Exchange Program

Do you need a pair of tap or ballet shoes? While most of our classes do not require you to buy any dance gear or footwear, our shows do require some extra expense. We do not want anyone to feel excluded because they cannot afford dance shoes. To help, we have setup a Shoe Exchange Program. If you have a pair of gently worn dance shoes that do not fit anymore we will gladly add them to our collection and hand them out to families who are looking for a new pair of dance shoes. If you would like to request a pair of shoes you can take a look at our currrent inventory anytime. CLICK HERE. Teacher Stephanie is in charge of this program. You can email shoes@smallfryadanceclub.com and she will coordinate getting the shoes to you. Thank you.
